Pyometra

Peke Nut | Pekingese Female Problems | Monday, 14 January 2008

My dog Mookie had pyometra back when she was 10 years old.  It is rare but can happen obviously.  If your Pekingese Female is spade well then you have nothing to worry about.

Pyometra is defined as: Pyo= pus  Metra= uterus

I noticed a few weeks after she had her heat cycle she kept licking herself and wouldn’t stop. I thought she was just giving herself a good cleaning after her heat.

I noticed a few days later a certain smell coming from her and checked it out. I could see an off white colored pus coming out of her vulva.  I got her into the vet who told me she had open pyometra and she needed to have surgery to remove this infection (the uterus).

She had surgery and was fine within weeks. The Vet said we were very lucky because there was a tremendous amount of pus inside her uterus.

Alot of dog owners don’t know what pyometra is and I hope to help others. If you see a liquid coming from the vulva get that dog into the vet immediately!  This is a life threatening disease that needs immediate attention.

Here is a link to a great article about pyometra:
