Pekingese and Anal Glands
I’ll have to be honest. I have never ever in my entire life knew what the heck an Anal Gland was until I owned a Pekingese! :]
I don’t know about the rest of you but almost all of my Pekes have some type of anal problem. They constantly scoot across the floor and it isn’t worms! They are not expressing their anal glands when they poop.
Mookie my oldes Peke goes to the vet every month for an anal gland expression. Princess needs to go in every 2 weeks … vet says she has glands like a Cat which are full and hard to express. My other Peke Baby Girl goes about once every 3 months. Teddy is ok maybe once a year vet visit for Anal glands Girly Girl needs to have hers expressed once every 2 months and Sonic once every 6 months or so.
I do not time this. I can tell by the way they act that they are not comfortable and need them expressed.
Now the other day Teddy who is quiet as can be and such a trooper was jumping around me and I noticed a leaf was stuck in his tail. I went to pull it out and noticed he had dried poop around the butt. I picked him up to clean him up and I could smell pus and poop.
Sure enough I lifted his tail he had an Anal gland abscess! That is one of the grossest things I have seen yet with these dogs. Teddy didn’t show any signs what so ever he was in any pain or anything. I was shocked that he was acting so happy etc., that he’d have an anal gland abscess. I took him to the vet where they cleaned him up gave him a steroid shot, antibiotic shot and put him on Amox. He’s doing great now.
So, moral of the story if your doggy is scooting have him checked for worms and to see if his Anal Glands are full. My vet charge $10 to express them and it’s worth every CENT!
