Pekingese gotta love em’
I’ve owned Pekingese for the past 12 years. Actually 14 years. I bought my first Peke back in 1994. He was beautiful with green eyes, grey, black and just a wonderful animal.
In 1998 just before he turned 4 years old he had to be put to sleep because of a Spinal Injury he sustained at birth according to the vet. It was bound to happen one day in his life that he would go paralyzed. He did in May 1998 just before his 4th birthday. No signs given to us what so ever.
Even the days before he had to be put down he was running around the yard. He would hop up on the couches, go up the steps to go outside. Up the steps to go to bed etc.,
I hope you see where I am getting at. Pekes should NEVER EVER jump on furniture, stairs nothing period! There backs are so fragile. My Peke was born with spinal problems that cannot be detected and are not known so early in life. It is the continuous jumping on furniture and stairs that does the final damage or should I say puts the final nail in the coffin.
This is the first peke I have ever owned and I was shocked and just heart broken when we had to put him down. It was Memorial Weekend and he was acting strange. Just hiding. I knew something was wrong and I was going to take him to the Vet on that Tuesday morning after the holiday. Little did I know his spine was compressed. He would still walk around and go out etc., I had no idea all I knew was he wasn’t acting right. He did not yelp, cry nothing.
To my surprise Tuesday morning when I woke up to see him sliding across the floor and not moving his hind legs, I immediately got him to the Vet to learn he had compressed his spine he was in a bad way and had to be put down. We miss him til this day.
I have 7 Pekes now. I have 4 girls and 3 boy Pekingese. Out of the 7 only 1 really has major health issues.
Pekes are wonderful little animals. They are so adorable when they are puppies and to see them being born is just amazing.
I got to see 4 litters of puppies being born. I have lost 3 Pekingese due to Spinal Problems. 2 of the Pekes I have owned I was there when they were delivered and I was there when they were put down. It was an honor. What are the odds of losing 3 Pekes to Spinal Problems? I have no idea it was hard but we got through it. It never discouraged me to never own another Pekingese. It made me stronger and wiser about the breed.
We have fun with all of our Pekingese. We also own 2 Lhasa Apso/Peke Mixes. We have 3 Acres of land with 1/2 of an acre fenced in for our little animals
I feel all dogs have health issues one time in their life or another. There is no such thing as a free puppy I’ll tell you that much.
So if you have any questions or concerns I may be able to help you.
I feel the males are very stubborn little guys. They still tend to mark in our house which is not good! I guess we have too many of them. The girls do it too sometimes. They are lazy little dogs and if you don’t let them out when they gotta go out they’ll just go!
Out of the 7 that I own, each one is unique. They each have a different personality. One talks, another one is sweeter than pie, another is masculine thinks he’s the head of househould, another is just show dog beautiful and I think he knows it. I have one who is really sweet and quiet very frail, another who just looks like she wants to sneeze all of the time.
All of these dogs are great and awesome with all kids.
